Wow, I love the comments on here.
All missing the one basic fact, why on Earth would you tell the RAC representative that the car had been left for 10 days.

My call would go like this, hello my car won’t start, yes it was fine yesterday and now will not start the battery is dead.
Had you left the lights on, No.
Job done new battery fitted under warranty.
Honesty is a wonderful thing until it kicks you in the teeth.
So you would promote dishonesty, even if it means committing a crime?

    Some people are honest ;).

I don't know exactly how it would work, but either they charge for a new battery, and you get refunded when the old one is tested and found to be faulty, or if the RAC man has a proper tester with him the test can be done on site. They will only warranty bad cells caused by material or manufacturing defects. Low terminal voltage due to over discharge and sulphation is specifically not covered, the tester can tell the difference.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • Thank you all for your insights. I think the bump start approach (notwithstanding the remark of Ganga) is worth learning, especially as he has a number of friends who spend Saturdays in a rugby scrum! I do question the morals of these companies, but I think my son and I do need to chalk this one down to experience.

A battery ought to last much longer than 10 days if it was resonably charged, and nothing electrical has been left switched on.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

A quick guess given returned from 10 day skiing trip. Car was at airport?

But who knows. Some people are just honest. Clearly some are not adverse to leaving out certain facts. Or in the "It was fine yesterday" after being away for 10 days day a blatant mistruth 😶‍🌫️

Quite true, mine has been standing 12 months and had to charge a dead battery at least 5 years old twice in that time.
Probably more a case of heater and fans going, wipers, lights etc and so on and suddenly switched off upon arrival. Fans firing up upon attempting to restart etc. Keep telling my nipper about that, still dont sink in.
