What sort of facilities are open or are all service stations closed? Would the local Shell be open?

I'm presuming the motorways are likely to be empty too?

Motorway services are open 24/7 365

In your average town there'll probably be a petrol station open somewhere

The roads will probably be very busy. A lot of people go to family on Xmas Day, or drop off presents at one, then drive on to another for lunch or tea.

As for whether petrol stations would be open, if you are going anywhere rural, I'd say "no". But on motorways they will be open.

If you can get through a whole tank of fuel in the one day though, you must be travelling a hell of a long way. That'd be about 450 miles in my car. Bit of a trip for Xmas Day!

I also advise people to get some cash out prior to Xmas. Over the Xmas period, cashpoints run out due to the bank holidays. A few years ago, I had to drive to 5 different cashpoints on boxing Day before I could find one which had any cash.

I always notice a lot of drivers who appear to have been drinking from late afternoon on xmas day. The general standard of driving can be quite poor as people who rarely drive jump in the car
  • I hope no-one on here is planning to drink & drive? The police are out in force this year nicking anyone with even just a little falling down water inside them, 40+ already in this area have been grabbed & it's not even Christmas yet.

Damn, the traffic cops work Christmas day, no bombing it up the M1 at 110mph, boo hoo.

The motorway services have to be open 365 24/7 as part of their licence. So at least that's somewhere to pee and fuel up. Some of them won't open the restaurant (and I use that world loosely for motorway services!) but you should be able to grab a coffee and a limp sandwich.

If your local garage is closed on Christmas Day then most Tescos will have Pay At Pumps open.

They won't be busy at all. I actually enjoy my drive down the M1 on Christmas Day morning - its only 50 miles, but I wish it was 250! The only other time I see it as quiet is middle of the night - but even then there can be large number of wagons - something you won't see on Christmas Day.

Anyone doing long distance will have done it. This year will be even quieter - the majority of my business contacts finish tomorrow, rather than Christmas Eve.

Christmas morning and New years day morning are simply the best times to drive!
I'm usually out and about between 6 and 7am and it's superb...not a person in sight

Yes, not a person in sight, but the police will sit on the motorway bridge watching you drive past.

The routes i drive i tend to know where the junctions with flyovers are, so tend to back off..
