Contribution ESA

When applying for ESA new style online it asks when do you want ESA to start. What date do I put in here the start of my sickness 7 months ago or after my SSP ends?

Thanks

I believe it's the date SSP ends, as you can't get ESA and SSP at the same time.

Yes the date the SSP ends. ESA can be backdated for a maximum of 3 months.

Will I have to request the back payment or will it be automatically paid with the first payment?

If you put the  start date that your SSp ended and that was some weeks ago then it will be automatically backdated. they will likely ask for backdated fit notes to be sent to them so make sure you have those..

I currently have a sick note from GP for my employer will I be able to use this sick note for ESA or will I need a separate one for them?

When the SSP is due to end your employer should provide an SSP1 form which confirms the date the SSP ends. A copy of SSP1 needs to be given to ESA along with the copy of the Fit Note. Help them that you want the ESA to start from the day after SSP.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

If you're in the Support Group and receiving more than £117.60/week then at least part of it will be Income Related. If it's just £117.60/week then all of it will be contributions based.

If any part of it is Income Related then your pension will reduce it £1 for £1. Pensions of up to £85/week are disregarded for contributions based/New style ESA. For every £1 over that amount your ESA will be reduced by 50p/week.

The letters they send out are confusing, and in most cases pretty useless.
If you claimed after January 2019 then it's 'New Style' ESA which is only ever Contributions Based.
If you claimed before that then it's probably (although not certainly) 'legacy' ESA and could be either CB ESA, IR ESA, or a combination of both.
If it's legacy ESA (and isn't £117.60 a week) then the best way to be absolutely sure is to ask them for a form ESA124 "How your Employment and Support Allowance was worked out".
(Yes I know, a long wait on the phone, or send a letter that may go 'missing').
Form ESA124 has 2 columns. Column A is CB ESA if you get that, Column B is IR ESA if you get that.
You may have figures in just one column or in both.
It also tells you how much is being deducted for pensions etc.
You can can download a blank example of an ESA124 by clicking this link:
