Grandparents childcare NI credits

Hello, can anyone please tell me whether my claiming additional years' NI contributions for looking after grandchildren would adversely affect my daughter's pension in years to come? I wouldn't want to take away any years that she might need when eventually she comes to retire. Thank you.

Your daughter is the person to ask.markdouble said:Hello, can anyone please tell me whether my claiming additional years' NI contributions for looking after grandchildren would adversely affect my daughter's pension in years to come? Thank you. I'm not sure she would know. My concern started when I read that it was a "transfer" of NI rights, indicating that I might gain something that she might lose. I feel a call to HMRC coming on!0

Aha! Thank you. So, it appears that the parent may qualify for NI contributions both from being in employment and also by registering for child benefit. Have I read that right? If so, she would still have a full year if she remained employed and paid NI, and losing her rights gained from child benefit would therefore not impact her pension entitlement. I hope I've got the right end of the stick. This piece...
- the child’s parent (or main carer) is entitled to Child Benefit and has a qualifying year for National Insurance without needing the parent’s class 3 NI credits which they receive automatically from Child Benefit.

Yes, If a parent has a full year of NI contributions and 52 weeks of NI credits from child benefit they can transfer the credits and still have a full year from contributions. It's also possible to have 104 weeks of NI credits, from another benefit, plus child benefit, and they can transfer the CB NI credits.0

Basically when the grandparent applies, the NI record of the parent is checked. If the parent needs the NI Credit herself then it wouldn’t be given to the grandparent.markdouble said:Aha! Thank you. On the theme of a grandparent claiming NI credits would it affect my daughter when claiming a free child nursery place as she currently claims0
-
No, that is not related to child benefit.

I spoke with the Future Pensions Office on this issue a couple of months ago with my wife and they confirmed she would meet the criteria to receive Childminding Credits. My Wife and Daughter completed the relevant Form and submitted it by Post (only method available) around 8 weeks ago. To date we haven't had any response, and to my knowledge there is no other way (contact number or email address) of contacting the relevant Government Department to confirm if they have received the Forms or are processing them. Does anyone have any previous experience of applying for this Credit and advise on a way to follow it up?0

It can take several months for the forms to be processed especially at this busiest time in history.
