You won't be able to contact the underwriters who calculate the premiums to ask them either.
In mass market consumer insurance the underwriters dont calculate the price, that's done by algorithms created by pricing analysts. Underwriters are much more involved in setting the general terms of policies and who should be insured.

In commercial insurance Pricing is set by analysts but underwriters negotiate within the bounds set by Pricing. Similarly they set the general principles of the policies but Wording Analysts set the exact wording. Ultimately they are the sales guys using the tools created by others.

Thanks all, and apologies for not coming back to comment sooner. Yes, totally agree that it was an outstanding quote last year (and probably an error). I guess my beef was that I was expecting £449 + 20/30% and then a 1 years NCB discount of something, say 10%. Essentially what we are saying is that the premium was somewhere around £1k and she has had say 20% discount (now that she has one years NCD and this was listed on renewal).

It just seemed such a massive difference (in base premiums). We have accepted that the average over two years is still probably a great price for her age and experience, it was more the lack of an explanation that made us question it. We don't expect a full breakdown of the premium, but a credible explanation for the increase would have been most welcome (appreciate we would not get this by calling, but thought the complaint might have revealed something). I'm not looking for a further discount, just an explanation on the hike in premium - but accept that we are not going to get this.
