Unexpectedly Thentax informed me that l have received a cheque from HMRC and are ready to send me a payment.
All they need now is for me is to provide my bank details via their secure online form so that they can send me my refund of £70.

My concern here is that l never once communicated with Thentax and they are taking 45% commission, bear in mind any additional funds is appreciated.
Though l was not expecting this sum of monies, are they in the right to be claiming such a high percentage?
Many Thanks

If it's the rate you agreed, yes. If not, no.
Ask them for a copy of the contract you signed.0 -

Generically, advance fee fraud drops a carrot in front of you and then asks you to payer a lower amount to get that carrot. If you ever watched an episode of the old BBC series, Hustle, then you would know the format.

If you had employed the company, then you would know about it. As you have not employed them then it sounds fishy as HMRC don't just send money to people that ask for it. They need to be supplied data via your tax return or other tax forms. If you have never given a third party any information or permission to do this then you really need to be on guard.

The company want to pay the op their share of the tax refund, which doesn't require the op to send them any money.
Whether the refund has been legitimately claimed is another matter and only the op can know that. The op can check their Personal Tax Account to details of any overpaid tax sent to the third part company.
