Asus product purchased on Amazon US warranty problem

Hi we bought a product from Asus which is still under warranty. The trouble is we bought it from Amazon US. So Asus UK won't help. They said we have to go to Asus US. Fine we thought. But no, Asus US need us to have a US address for the repair to be carried out. We live in the UK. How is OK for companies to happily sell their products abroad but then won't honour the warranty to those customers?

Because warranties are above and beyond statutory rights. They can set whatever rules they want to their warranties.

Had you bought it from the UK then the Consumer Rights Act would apply between you and the seller. You would need to check with Amazon US on which legal jurisdiction applied to the purchase and then check what consumer rights you may have under that state (assuming its the US) but normally US rights are much less than UK which in part is why prices are lower.

If you want to buy products from abroad and there is a possibility it will go wrong, then that's up to you.  You probably should have looked into the practicalities of returning it (if required) before you bought it in the first place.

I dare say 98% of international signs are to wholesalers who pass onto resellers who pass onto either other resellers or onto the customer.

As far as the US goes, any warranties are probably state specific (there is a thing called Magnuson-Moss which is the federal law that governs consumer product warranties) but you probably need to do your own research.

Plenty of Asus motherboards on Amazon UK, not entirely sure why you felt you need to buy from the US arm.  Was it because it was cheaper on the US site?
  • Thank you - in fact it was my son who bought it and I believe it's because there was quite a dirth of very good high spec cards at the time. If course now we will be more careful but it's not something that occurred to him being at the time an 18 year old lad 🙂
