Based on previous suggestions of ringing when they first open at 8am I made my call last Friday and got into the queue. Took over 30 mins to actually speak to an advisor but they were most helpful and then offered to transfer me to the centre that gives you the reference number you need to make additional NI contributions. After just a few minutes wait I got the number I needed so total call around 45 mins and everything sorted.

I was just thinking about the following tactic (my husband needs to get this sorted)
-Write a letter to the Future pensions centre postal address, Quoting NI number and the calculation of the lump sum to pay for missing years, as it states on the Government Gateway
-Asking them to confirm the amount, any reference number to quote and who a cheque should be made out to

Has anyone tried this approach or similar?

You will likely get an answer in 6 to 9 months if at all. And FPC don't deal with payments or payment references, that is HMRC.
You can just send a cheque and letter stating the years you want to pay. https://www.gov.uk/pay-voluntary-class-3-national-insurance/by-post
If you want to sense check what needs paying post up the forecast details and someone will talk you through it.
Current £££.pp amount accrued up to April 2022 (and if that amount was from a forecast pre or post April 11th 2023)
Number of pre 2016 NI years full
Number of post 2016 NI years full
Tax year you reach state retirement
Any COPE amount shown, in a click link in "You've been in a contracted-out pension scheme" if there is one.
Years which show not full and prices

  • Thank you, that's really helpful.  He'll try the number a few more times and then try your guide, thanks again!
  • We got through straight away at 8am today (waiting to press the last digit on the phone at 8 exactly!) and that did the trick.  Thanks for your help :)
