Smart gas meter and dumb electric meter - will the gas readings be sent automatically?

My elderly neighbour has the above set up and claims she doesn’t need to send readings to her supplier for gas consumption because it’s a smart meter but I thought it was necessary to have a smart electric meter as well in order for the smart gas meter to be able to send readings?

Im afraid she might one day get a massive bill or be overpaying her direct debits. She didn’t want to discuss it (head in the sand approach).

Depends if a communication hub has been set up for the gas meter - the usual approach is indeed to install it with the electric meter.

What do her bills show? Does the Gas meter reading show
    S (Smart) C (Customer) E (Est)?

I don’t know as she doesn’t want to discuss it and even hides the hub thingy behind a vase so she cant see what she’s used. I was trying to pre empt the day I will get a panicked phone call about some massive bill but for all I know it’s all OK. Good idea though to check S C E 👍 if she will let me!

She’s got dual fuel so I guess the electric meter couldn’t be changed for some reason so hopefully they set up a hub for the gas smart meter then knowing it couldn’t go through the electric dumb meter! Gas is in a understairs space, electric meter is about eight foot away over front door with thick walls in between if that makes it difficult to communicate too?

You'd have to be able to have a look at the gas meter and take a photo for the more knowledgeable members here to be able to tell you whether it looks like there's a comms hub or not.  - Though I've just reread and this is a neighbour, not a relative (I misremembered) so it would totally depend on what your neighbourly relationship is like.

Was she an ostrich about energy usage before it was changed, or is this new?  Bit concerning, because if the gas meter isn't sending readings and nobody is supplying them then she can't possibly get accurate bills.  But there's only so much you can do.  If she has capable relatives I guess you could try and give them a heads-up but beyond that, I don't know.
