Santander asking for pin?

Not sure if I’m just being ultra suspicious because of so much fraud seemingly about but l just had to call Santander to set up a direct debit as online banking was giving me an error message and the person in the phone asked me for the first two and the last number of my 5 digit log in pin. Is this normal? It seems a but crazy to be giving out the majority of my pin when we are always told never to give it to anyone. To be clear this is the pin for my online banking not my physical card.

Exactly - it's not your PIN (as in the number that protects the card), but an unrelated online/telephone banking security number, and yes, it's normal to be asked this when dealing with them on the phone.

I've often been asked for that, there are normally a few digits from something you have to give to verify who you are.

Normal. As others have said its your online and telephone banking security number.
