Switch British Gas to Octopus?

I'm thinking of switching to Octopus - probably to try their Agile tariff. Even if I end up on their standard tariff, though, am I right to think that with the energy cap this shouldn't leave me significantly worse off?

Cost will be pretty much the same, service will be massively improved.

Rang Octopus today as I wanted to switch from Agile to Flux tariff, call answered after 6 minutes, email sent instantly for me to accept new t&c, I filled in and sent confirmation, minutes later switch started and showing in my online account.

You won't regret it, Octopus just get it done without a fuss.

I don't know whether you've seen this item. It's been updated. Re:'Agile Octopus' and 'Octopus Tracker

I'm glad I made that move late last year.
Ask friends or family for a referral, so you both get £50.

I switched from BG to Octopus about 3 weeks ago.
All done online & completed within 4 working days.
    Went onto their Flexible tariff.
Requested gas & electric smart meters online after the switch.
Smart meters fitted in about 10 days.
Smart meters up & running in a couple of days.
Just moved to their Agile tariff for the electric, again all done online.
All done in a few hours.
    Absolutely brilliant service.

    Hi

Just out of interest how long do you have to stay with Octopus to get the referral cash?

    Many thanks

No time length, Octopus pay up when you make your 1st payment to them.

Agile seems to work very well at the moment, as long as you switch everything off between 4-7pm, I did the same switch but do watch out for BG slipping in a final "estimated" reading even if you have a smart meter and they will take a DD even if you are in credit so cancel it, they are slow to issue a final bill but in general it is an easy move.

Barring a few outliers, and a few £ difference each year, switching from one supplier's SVT to another's SVT will not change your annual bill. What we don't know is what your current EDF fix rates are - if they're lower than SVT, then your annual bill will go up if you move to an SVT tariff.

The difference with Octopus should be service, though reports are that that has been a bit more mixed recently.

Where Octopus shines is its time of use tariffs. Check the Agile and Tracker threads on this board, but note that the formulae used have changed recently (more expensive) so take that into account when reading posts prior to the last month or so.
