Accidental damage claim

I inadvertently kicked  paint on my bedroom carpet and it also affected the landing carpet. I have accidental damage insurance so submitted a claim and a quote to replace the bedroom, landing and stairs carpet including underlay (approx £2k)The insurance company have now said they will only pay for the actual square meterage of the 2 areas affected  not the amount i need to buy and 50% of the stairs (apparently this is a separate area) which totals about £1000. Is this normal practice and given the effect it will have on my renewal premiums is it worth continuing with the claim?

    Yes that appears normal.

Normally Insurers will help replace the carpet area which has been damaged.  So for example if a room had one big carpet and part was damaged, they they would replace the whole room carpet.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Yes, if you bought a policy that doesn't cover matching sets then they are only liable for the damaged part and not the undamaged. In the old days they'd have offered nothing towards the stairs but the ombudsman started this 50/50 thing despite what the policy says and hence they now do it as standard. If however it was the case of different rooms with door treads dividing the rooms then they'd not have to give anything to the other rooms even if originally it was all matching carpet.

Personally, matching set cover is something I wouldnt be without.

If its worth going ahead depends on what your excess is and what your claim value would be (its not totally clear from your post but think its £1,500 less you excess)
