I think I’d have told them I pay with cash, don’t have any cards any more.

It’s not for “future reference”. The system asks for card details to be captured incase of any future refunds or exchanges relating to that specific item. So your original card is expired. If anything was to happen with this one and a refund is needed, they need your current card details. It’s no different to purchasing anything online and giving your payment information. All payment details are encrypted and aren’t used for anything other than that purchase.

And the card given now will be expired in the future, so back to square one.

A much more sensible system would be to take card details when (on only when)  it is needed.

I’m not saying it’s the best system, I’m explaining what it’s for. It’s unlikely the customer will keep coming back for refunds  and cards last for what… 4 years?

The same would happen if you purchased the item originally using a gift card.

I don't understand why people get so worked up and end up wasting so much time on trivial issues. I would just give them the card details, receive my new frying pan and carry on with life.
And there speaks the voice of reason.  I never get it either.  New frying pan or the off-chance someone does something they shouldn't with a card that I have full protection on.......

Aside of the fact a guarantee can stipulate whatever terms it wants.  Does the OP have the original terms of their guarantee to dispute them now......?
