RAC breakdown cover renewal reduction

Hi, I just wanted to let people know that it's worth challenging automatic renewals for breakdown cover - or anything else really. You can always try. . . Today I received a text advising me that my RAC breakdown cover had automatically renewed for the next 12 months. I'd forgotten to do anything about it when I received the prior notification in February. My bad, yes. But when I phoned to say I didn't want to renew because the price was £20 more than it was last time and last time the cover was for 15 months and included home start, I spoke to a perfectly lovely lady who said she'd see what she could do for me. She got me a similar deal for 15 months with home start and free legal care plus. For just £5 more than last time.

I was very pleased and just wanted to pass the message along that it's always worth a haggle and today, I didn't even have to start the haggling since the lady started it for me.

So, I'm a continuing customer with RAC. Which is great since we're very rarely going anywhere still as my daughter and I are immunocompromised but still, one never knows when and if a long journey may be in the offing.

No need to respond, just wanted to pass the message on in case anyone was in a similar position. Even though it was the last minute I was able to avoid paying the renewal fee - which I felt was not a bargain at all.

Basically I wanted to say, do try haggling. It can be great fun - and beneficial too.

    Hi OP

    Thnaks for sharing

My stance has always been with car, buildings, BTL , extended warranty, nEVER to auto-renewal. This is because as you have found and or other deals with cashback around. (but as you found out, call them before renweal date works just as well)

Even if you are on autrenwe like you, yes, call them and check for better deals as at time on car insurance at least, you can easily save around 200 inc cashback with a new insurance co and like for like insurance.

Btw, OP - I'm sure there are other breakdown services out there even cheaper but personally, for us, its RAC all day long and atm, we have the manuafactures breakdown cover with their own mobile units supported by the RAC

    :)

Every year I negotiate with the RAC, my home/contents insurer and my car insurer and every year I get a much lower price from all of them than they were originally trying to charge. On the odd occasion it has been lower than the previous renewal
