Renting References....

Options
I am hoping someone out there can put my mind at rest. I am hoping to move into a rental propery with my partner and am going through the credit and reference checks. However i'm worried as my previous address was a private rental, which un-fortunately ended on bad terms, and I don't have a contact number like they ask you to provide, that this will go against me, OR if they choose to write to them I will be given a bad reference!!! help!! it seems un-fair that it should go against my chances of renting again. what do you think?

best thing to do in your situation is to tell the landlord when you view, that way they can take a fair judgement of the situation.

Could you just not mention that you've rented before and give referee details for someone who may paint you in a bit better light?

Why did it end on bad terms?

  • thats a tad harsh

there are good and bad tenants and good and bad landlords, so it may have been a misunderstand or a bad LL

I used to rent privately, when it came to renting at a new property i declared my previous address, i too parted on bad terms but that was because the landlord refused to carry out any maintainence work on the property (leaking toilet, rotten porch support that could of dropped half a ton of bricks at any time), also i was late for rent one month, only by a week as my partner had left and i had to find her half of the rent and he came knocking aggressivly on the door at 11pm at night and threatened to open the door and enter the property!!

I would have been given a bad reference for this so chose not to mention it.

I am on my 3rd rental property now and had no problems.

I agree that is too harsh. There are far to many circumstances where it's a case of she says, he says and landlords can be as guilty of being poor at their job as tenants can be guilty of being poor tenants.

If you can explain the circumstances to the new landlord, in my experience it shouldn't affect things.
