I recently tried to open a Newbury savings account online. Everything seem to go fine until a couple of days later when I received an email asking me to send ID documents to them by post.

I'm on the electoral register and have opened several accounts online within the past year or so, each successfully verifying me electronically so I was a little surprised, and because I didn't want to send documents with my ID/personal data through the post, I declined and asked them to close the account. A few days later I opened a HSBC Online Saver account and was identified online without a problem.

I know you mention opening an account by post, but I thought my experience might be of interest.

I've opened "Welcome to Newbury" over a month ago online. Didn't have to send anything. I can't recall any complications with opening and funding my account.
The only hitch is the "take money out" button is missing.  I called them twice.  First time round the rep didn't know how to deal with this issue and said he will pass it to somebody else and they will call me back, this never happened.  Second time I called I was told that there is a technical problem and they are working on it, but in the mean time if I want to make withdrawal I can do it by calling or sending a secure message. So not really a problem.
  • I opened my accounts many years ago, in person at branch.  I cannot remember what I did to verify identity, if anything.

It was many years before I went online, and did have to provide proof of my linked account in order to make withdrawals online - I did this by taking a copy of a bank statement in to my local branch.  I think there was a way to do it via the "open banking", but I prefered to avoid that unless it was absolutely necessary.
