Deposit for Viewing

Hi all,

I have seen a rental property on marketplace, and have communicating with them and all seems good. Alarm bells have just started to ring, as they said that in order for me to view the property they would need a holding deposit equivalent to a weeks rent. Now am I being cynical, or does that not make sense?

I have heard of this scam, it is likely the property doesn't exist.

probably stolen pictures from a real listing, and you will never see the money, or the inside of the property.

If you have to ask whether it's a scam ...

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Let us know the link - and we'll all try and sign up for a viewing :) (Sounds very much like a scam - no true letting agent or decent landlord is going to ask you for hundreds of pounds just to look at a property)

    Likely fraud.

    Use Rightmove, Openrent etc.

So much demand and not enough supply, fraudsters are taking advantage of people.
  • Wasn't this on Watchdog a few years ago? Some guy took multiple deposits for the same flat, so they set up a sting where two of their staff put down deposits and then arranged to turn up at the property at the same time. Usual Watchdog mucking about, but it's a fairly well established scam at this point.
