Child Benefit claims

Hi all
Bit worried that we could have been claiming child benefit and never have!

DS is 4 (5 in July)
DD is 3 (4 in December)

I earn £82k per year, my partner earns about £750 per month, so £9k per year.

I have been told previously that as I earn over £50k we can't claim but someone said that if my partner claimed, as she is under the weekly threshold then we could be eligible for around £30 per week per child. Is this right?

If so, I reckon we've missed out on quite a bit of child benefit over the years! :(

Thanks

You could have claimed, but you would have had to pay it back via the tax system as you earned more than £50k pa. There woul have been no net benefit.

I thought the absolute cut off point was £60k, with graduated payback between £50k & £60k.

In some circumstances it's beneficial to claim (even if paid back) due to NI credits towards SP.
In this case though, unlikely, as the partner is earning and above the NI LEL
Alice Holt Forest situated some 4 miles south of Farnham forms the most northerly gateway to the South Downs National Park.
  • Thanks everyone. Appreciate the comments. I'll ask partner to check NI contributions and to put a claim in for pension if applicable.

I'm also thinking that perhaps if we did claim and then i repay on self assessment, then we could earn a bit of interest on the credits in the meantime

You could.  If you play the system to it's extreme you could potentially receive Child Benefit in April 2023 (after 5 April) and not have to finally pay it all back until your final pay of the 2025:26 tax year, probably at the end of March 2026 😃
