Major issues with GivEnergy battery and inverter

  • My experience from Giv Energy couldn't be better.  I was also seeing regular drop offs in battery charge with very similar graphs to your own.  The support guys helped out and also mentioned there was a new firmware update for batteries due out in a month or so.  Turned out to be nearly 3 months later,  firmware update processed and all is now good.  If you haven't already done so,  upgrade to battery firmware 3012 or 3013.

I am well aware of the firmware. I'm glad it is working well for you.  I'll sit this out till the newer problems identified has been sorted.

    Welcome to MSE forums.

3013 does not solve the problem, which I truly expect you are fully aware. I found GE tech support far from helpful. In fact quite the opposite and they lied to me on one call and cut me off when I pointed out the information they gave was completely a 180 on what they'd said 5 minutes before.

All of their product range is affected by this problem. Their firmware fix for this is like the gold pot at the end of the rainbow.
I have found a way to work around this using Home assistant and it also helps that we use a lot of leccy per day.

Could you share what your workaround is? I had been using HA using BatPred. It seemed to work well, however, it didn't stop the fall from 22% to zero in seconds and something that completely screwed HA. The charging side of things appears now to be a bit random, though is following a pattern - its just an hour out. They have said its because I have "smart tariff" selected - I've changed nothing so no idea why this is happening.

They have tried to fob me off with a "bets" firmware which they admit will cause other issues. I didnt sign up to be their testing partners, so have informed them that's not acceptable. Obviously my contract is with the installer. If I accepted this intervention, it would nullify my consumer protection.

I spoke with my insurance company legal department who advised me to give them 14 days to rectify or demand a full refund if they do not fix or offer a viable solution. I hope they don't think its an idle threat on my part because they will soon learn it isn't.

They have admitted it doesn't affect all battery / inverters claiming its just a handful. I just want one fit for purpose.

This issue was happening in the previous firmware to the one I have now and continued with this one. They've had long enough (as you've said) to resolve this and frankly selling it with this critical fault is quite scary. They've said they think they are covered because its a firmware issue not hardware. Since they control the firmware, I suspect the judge will have a different opinion. We will see. They have 6 days left to agree to swap out. I have seen in other places people have had this happen. Hopefully they oblige without it getting messy.

Please message me if you can with your workaround and experience with dealing with GE on this issue.
  • my AIO battery went from 94% to 0 in a single minute.

I switched the AIO breaker, off then on (to reset), the whole house lost power. even though supply was coming through the electricity meter.

ended up switching on the bypass.

anyway, turns out that the breaker on the side of the unit was switched off!

switched it on on again, the light is blue, and unit keeps beeing.

contacted GE today. they are trying to fix it. but not managed to yet!
  • I wondered if this thread was still current, here's our experience. I have a GE system which was excellent until a firmware update in November 2024. After that time the battery wouldn't charge which was fixed by a forced charge by a local technician. Since then its been really difficult to control the battery with the app ( which may be down to me trying to understand the app) .I want the battery to charge at offpeak rate ( octopus 13p) and discharge at peak period ( octopus 40p) . Unfortunately it won't. In Jan we used a huge amount of electric as the battery would charge and then immediately discharge - mostly to the grid for which we get nothing back. Now the battery charges over night and then doesn't discharge at the required times.   Tech help from Give Energy have tried and have been helpful but things don't seem to be working as we want and the battery is sat idle at 100% charged. I can force a discharge at peak time but that's about all. I have recalibrated the battery and restarted the inverter but now I am leaving it alone in the hope that GE Tech can reset things remotely

@pap1955 do you have the correct Octopus tariff in the Givenergy portal ( https://givenergy.cloud )?  I don't use this option but my portal has a Smart Tariff section I can edit to set up tariff automations.

Doesn't seem to make any difference - the battery chareges from solar now as I've switched off the AC charge. Unfortunately even when it has charged from solar it discharges to the grid not the house
