Will Child’s Claim for UC Affect my CBESA & PIP Claim?

My youngest (20) has been living with me for 8 months after leaving college, & lost her p/t job after Xmas. She’s hoping to join the forces & is applying for jobs as the forces process continues. Just been told the earliest she can join is September.
She has no savings & I’m supporting her financially through my PIP, old style CBESA (support group) & my own savings. I’ve lost the 25% single person Council tax reduction, so it’s a struggle some months.
If she claims UC will we be classed as a household & will this trigger a move for me from CBESA to UC?

He claims UC for himself. It makes no difference to your benefits (ns-ESA and PIP).Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.2

Thanks Calcotti! I was hoping that was the case. The system hasn’t always worked as well as it should have for me at times over the years, & the ‘help’ from DWP staff has often been incorrect regarding the old style ESA. I dread having to deal with them.calcotti said:He claims UC for himself. It makes no difference to your benefits (ns-ESA and PIP).
Thank goodness for this forum & the helpful, knowledgeable people on here.0 -
If your son will be giving you 35 hours/week helping after you he can declare himself a carer when he applies UC and will get the carer element of the UC amount in addition to the standard amount..

Missed this earlier, thanks again Calcotti. It’s a good idea but I doubt he’d go for it! Housework is not where his talents lie…calcotti said:If your son will be giving you 35 hours/week helping after you he can declare himself a carer when he applies UC and will get the carer element of the UC amount in addition to the standard amount..0 -
Carer is not just about house work. It is about being there to support & assist someone.JKS$( said:

@born_again - I’m visually impaired so the kind of care/support I need is mostly of a practical nature. I don’t need assistance in cleaning the bathroom, I need to either be left alone to do the entire room myself by ‘feel’ whether it all needs cleaning or not, or have someone with better eyes than me to clean the bits that need cleaning. Having someone assist by telling me to go left a bit, up a bit etc is so frustrating!
He does help with reading post from companies that ‘can’t do’ large print (DWP take a bow 😡) & is good at finding things, but it wouldn’t come close to 35 hours.
@peteuk - it’s health specific. He needed to wait for 12 months after an operation.
He’s been offered 8 hours/week working in a petrol station which will pay far more than UC. Much better result!1
