Switching providers

Hello, please excuse my ignorance. I am switching from Virgin Media broadband to Vodaphone. I have a date for the engineer to come to my house confirmed. 
Do I have to phone Virgin media to cancel or will my new provider do this? Also, is the date for the engineer the date I switch?

You will have to contact Virgin Media and give 30 days notice that you wish to leave.
If you are within your contract still, this might incur costs (price rise at the moment is a good get out clause)..
You will (might) have to return all Virgin Media equipment to VM.

Thank you. I am out of contract. I thought I saw something when signing up to Vodaphone that they would let my old provider know. Not sure if I read it right though.

I believe if you are transferring from a ADSL/Fibre provider to another, they might be able to inform them, something to do with the OpenReach providing the infrastructure to them. Virgin and the 4G mobile broadband providers use their own cable/mobile network in the majority of cases, so they are separate entities entirely and unlikely to inform the other parties.

I always find it better to assume everyone in the telecoms industry will do a bad job, and cover myself for that eventuality.
