Typical household energy bills will remain at £2,500 a year for at least three months from 1 April as the Government has heeded ours, and others, calls to postpone a planned 20% rise. The announcement ahead of today's Budget follows a month-long campaign led by Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, which has been backed by 130 charities and consumer organisations.

It may be a win for Martin Lewis (debatable as it was a vote winner anyway and he had no influ nice on the chancellor whatsoever) but it is a loss for taxpayers and the future debt burden of generations to come as stated on other threads unnecessary between April-Jun imo.

I wish these stories were expressed in unit rates, or at the very least some examples given.  For example if the "average" household bill is supposed to be unchanged at £2,500 and I think we've already been told that S/C will rise, does that mean the net unit prices will fall a little?

We need to be weaned off these government hand outs at some point. You'd think from some comments that people think the government is wholly responsible for the price rises, and could just cut the price on a whim. 
To take to an extreme, we could just make electricity free, funded from general taxation. I can't think anyone would think that's a good idea.

I can think of quite a few who would, but they aren't the ones who will end up pay ing for it all through increased taxation

Well we'd benefit as I'm not paying income tax at the moment and hope/expect to minimise it in retirement. Although I guess if it was funded by an increase I  VAT then I'd be paying. However I am quite happy to say although I might be  better off, I still think across the board government subsidies for energy are a bad idea.

Thank you for the thread. Yes, some of the credit should go to Martin as if it was not for people like him, we'd be far worse off IMHO.

The handouts are just that. The government like any other lot is making itself look good, it is all playing politics and trying to fool the public

What people must never forget is that gas prices were at their lowest for years as was the price of oil, Therefore, rather than handing back taxpayers cash to taxpayers and thos not paying tax, why not do the right thing and ensure no profiteering is going on by the big boys and quest for greener energy is managed in a more cost-effective manner.

Having stated the above, nothing will change and the millions that work and pay taxes and are not bililionoaners will continue to suffer as will those that were close to struggling but are now desperate to heat their homes and pay astronomical prices for food.

The way forward is for those in government to serve the the British citizens in an honest and upfront manner and put them first rather than themsleves. Sadly, this will never, never ever happen and history is proof of that.

TBH, I am glad re this so-called cap as many more are getting very desperate. I also agree that everyone benefits from the cap rather than targeted groups of people.

One thing that doesn't appear to be picked up on is that some customers who were on a fixed tariff originally well above £2500 level will see their prices go up from April as the EPG support they receive is less.  There wont be many still on these tariffs now but it will be counter intuitive for the ones that are to see a price increase notice come through the door!

So far we've received nothing from the EPG so forgive me if I think that ML is only interested in his profile or limiting the cost of heating his pool.

If that truly is the case then you've been paying less than everyone else for all this time and are a winner already.
