You should:
1. Try and speak with a manager (not easy these days)
2. Register a complaint
3. Consider getting a claims resolution/legal expert involved (as per my previous post), particularly if claim looks an expensive one.
Your prompt action is pretty important here. I do appreciate that this claim is not the only issue that you are currently dealing with, and my thoughts are with you.
Good luck

Seems bonkers that you can have your liberty restricted and yet still be held responsible for actions while in same mental state!0

Does your husband have his own car and his own insurance policy ? If so check this as many policies cover you to drive another vehicle and in which case this company may help fight your corner.
Regarding your insurance, you have only got to the first level of employee, who in my experience are preprogrammed to reject every claim. I truly believe this is a deliberate policy by them as many people will give up at the first hurdle. We had a complex legal insurance case and it took some time and pressure before they finally accepted our policy covered the situationy. Your car was insured, wrong number plate is a technicality.....which I can't believe they will successfully hide behind. Good luck, I feel your pain.0 -
I'm imagining that when you reported the incident to the insurer you were able to provide a policy number, able to pass the data protection screening and would also have been able to provide the previous reg number of the car.
In a sensible world, if they were unsure, the employee you spoke to should have referred to their manager for advice. Unfortunately these days many first line employees are dissuaded or even disincentivised from referring to managers.
At this point your best course of action is to follow the insurer's complaints process, which will be detailed in your policy documents. This is the surest way of getting a more competent and experienced person to look at the matter, and if they still black-ball the claim they will (if they are not totally useless) provide a final position letter that you can take to the Ombudsman.
All the best to you and your husband.
