Incorrect bad debt

My daughter and her boyfriend are trying to get a mortgage as first time buyers and have been declined. This is because of a poor credit report for him. There is a debt showing on Experian for British Gas which is in his name, it shouldn't be, he lived with his parents at the address that the debt is associated with, but his name was on the British Gas account. We are trying to get through to British Gas but can't speak to anyone as he does not have an account number. We have queried it with Experian but really need to sort this out immediately otherwise they will lose their house. She is so upset. Can anyone help please? Thanks

If the account was NOT in his name, he should dispute via BG (get the account number from his parents but it shouldn't be needed) and dispute through the CRAs (all where it appears, not just Experian).
If the account WAS in his name, then it will remain.
It won't be resolved immediately, so they need to manage their expectations re the mortgage.1 -
Credit/debt is assigned to an individual, not an address. As per the previous post, you need to ascertain whether his name was actually on the account. Is this one of those cases where a son has the same first name and surname as his father? If so, you need to contact BG first and get the error corrected. they should be able to get an update sent to the CRAs, but this may take a little while.0
