    Sod now we cannot go.

A lot of money sadly lost.

Of course you can go, it's your son that can't go, but I expect he's an adult so it won't hurt him to stay at home by himself for a while.
  • I would be very surprised if any LA took action on this. When working as an Attendance Officer, I only ever saw legal action taken on repeat offenders.  It is not an easy action to take. A 'telling off ' letter is far more common.

We took a few factors into consideration during exam years:

There is always a contingency day for exams which is typically 7 days (5 school days) after the final exam scheduled by the exam boards. This may be more that 7 days after the students last exam if they are not sitting on the last day. Whilst the contingency day is not announced until the exam schedules are finalised it is generally about the same time. It ois entirely your risk if you go anywhere before this date, probably a low risk as not sure when it was last used.

If doing BTECS or course based work, sometimes these can run past the exam window if the student has not completed them. Schools will not allow the student to finish before that work is complete. This is typically in the hands of the student to get it all done on time.

Some schools allow students to be signed off once they have done their final exam and completed any other work. Most seem to work this way, some don't so it needs to be checked.

Prom dates vary with some being before the end of the official term but after exams have finished, some early in the summer holidays, some later. Some students don't care about attending, some would be devastated to miss it.

Results day, typically around the same date each year, some don't care about being around for it, others do. Also need to consider what you would do if the results aren't as expected and you needed to do clearing or speak to the 6th form or college to arrange the next phase of education.

Lots to think about and navigate through, none of them insurable against.

For us it meant we could go away after the contingency date and be back for prom / results and still be before the main holiday dates.
