Some insurance companies operate an age limit. If you are over a certain age then they decline. They can also do so for cars of a certain age which is why *specialist insurance* comes in just as with classic cars.

My renewal came up this month with a 40% increase on last year's premium (no accidents or convictions). I will reach 80 years old during the year and I think that must be the reason. Perhaps some companies just refuse cover at any price for old age. I managed to get cover at a reasonable price using Compare the Market.
No matter who you are there will always be someone who's not interested in insuring you but we have a big range of insurers and intermediaries out there and a highly competitive market.

As to "it must be the reason", it will almost certainly have been a factor but it's unlikely that it's the only rating factor that has changed. When I did some work in motor pricing the technical pricing team could make small changes daily, over 365 days these can add up. The Pricing Committee reviewed every rating factor at least every 6 weeks and could make more substantial changes to meet strategic objectives or correct for unintended consequences.

It's a maze for sure. I'm getting older by the minute but the AA that I'd used for ages suddenly increased by 100pc.
I used a comparison site and plumped for Tescos. Was a bit anxious as I've always used main suppliers but when I changed car for a newish one the customer service was excellent.
Have yet to find out what happens in the case of an accident.

We used Tesco a few years ago,  Wrote our car off when we landed upside down in a ditch,  after skidding on packed snow.

Tesco dealt with the claim promptly, they offered less than my husband wanted but increased it to his figure when he refused the first offer.

Replacement car was covered by existing insurance policy although it was a newer model,

I dreaded what the next year's renewal would be-- it was lower than we had paid for the existing year,

    Can't complain.
