No it isn't true. The maximum penalty for the offence (which is not prosecuted very often) is a fine of £1,000.

Renewing a driving licence that has been expired for some time

If more than two years has passed since your driving licence expired, you may be made to retake your driving test in order to get a new licence. This is especially the case if your licence has expired due to age (driving licences need to be renewed when you reach seventy years of age) or for medical reasons. For these, you may also have to pass a medical. In other cases, you can simply apply for a new licence without problem, although the DVLA will often want to know why your licence has been expired for so long.

This is what i read that made me think i would have to retake my test

No. In the absence of medical issues, or disqualification by a court, your entitlement to drive is valid until you reach 70.

Your licence (i.e. your right to drive) hasn't expired. It's your photocard which has expired.

Are you reading the replies here? Where does it say on the internet that if your photocard has expired you have to retake your test? If those places aren't reputable sources of information, why are you believing them?
