in Cutting tax
Bit of a newbie here! I’ve searched the forum for answers but can’t find anything definitive. My wife has a part time job which puts her under the tax and NI threshold. She also sells jewellery on Etsy which provides a small extra income ( around £2000pa) and self declares this income. For the last three years she has been paying voluntary NI contributions. Does she actually need to do this if she’s getting credits from the part time job?
Many thanks

No. You only have to pay compulsory NI. If she is getting credits towards her record from employment then there is no need to make voluntary class 2.

Does your wife claim the trading allowance against her self-employment (in the event that both incomes take her over the personal allowance)?datz53 said:Bit of a newbie here! Is she earning over the Lower Earnings limit though (£123 a week) ?datz53 said:Bit of a newbie here! I’ve searched the forum for answers but can’t find anything definitive. My wife has a part time job which puts her under the tax and NI threshold.
If so even though she' under the Primary Threshold for actually paying NI, she'll be getting creditted with it.
If not, then as recently in the news, making voluntary contributions are very good value if you need the years to get to the full state pension (she should get a state pension forecast if she hasdn't already to see where she's at)
Check your State Pension forecast - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Yes. The ability to pay for all missed years back to 2006 (rather than just the last six years) has been extended to 31 July 2023.p00hsticks said:

Thank you all for your advice. She’s checking her contributions online so we know exactly where we are with this. She’s over the Lower Earnings limit so should have been credited with years.1
