why not try a Skoda dealer if you want to stay in the VAG group or a local independant if the car is out of warranty should be around £260

Going to a skoda/audi dealer is not a good idea as even though it is the VAG group should anything go wrong and you need recompense VW would be unable to do anything as the technicians are not all trained in the same way. If you go to France be sure to keep any documentation for the same reason. Also if you happen to have your car serviced over there make sure they stamp your book!!

You could always shop around VW retailers as they set their own prices (cos they are a franchise they can do that .. VW have no say!) so you may get it done cheaper elsewhere.

PS -- If you haven't guessed I work for VW LOL

Thanks, the crazy thing is that in the last year I hardly used the car. I took it in for its second MOT just before Christmas and the mechanic pointed out that I had only driven 1600 miles or so since the last one!!
You mention VAG dealerships but does anyone know if I am right in noting that over here in the UK VAG deliberately keep the group apart? For example, I once had an Audi dealer near to my last home town that was also a VW franchise so both were side by side but then suddenly had to give one of the franchises up. However, when I have been on the continent it appears that VAG are happy to have all three marques under one roof so to speak.

Its due to many things. Sometimes a brand will pull out of a particular location due to it not making money in the way they want or a particular franchise is not running the brand well. Sometimes a franchise will decide that it doesn't benefit them financially. As far as I'm aware there are no hard and fast rules about a complete VAG franchise comprising skoda audi seat VW etc.

Well have you got a French price yet? From the same website pointed to by Redux, the timing belt in French is known as "La courroie synchrone"

Quel serait le prix pour remplacer une courroie synchrone sur une VW passat tdi de Janvier - deux mille quatre.
