I have been able to claim some tax back from PPI payments using a third party Help Your Tax . I have received around £34 back, but now I have received a tax calculation for 2018/19 from the tax office asking the to pay them an additional £1800 back. They have changed my Income Saving to a figure that is over £10,000 for that year (I wish!), anyway its just wrong. They won't now change it, explains that Help Your Tax was my reprensettaive and provided the information. I let them know that we all get things wrong and they should amend. They refused asking me to contact Help Your Tax that they say is now my agent! Alternatively I have been asked to contact the Fred Office, which Inhale done. I think this is actually HMRC manipulating the facts and trying to exploit honest tax payers. What should I do next?

Thats a shame.  its a two minute job if you do it yourself.

They have changed my Income Saving to a figure that is over £10,000 for that year (I wish!), anyway its just wrong.
Did they perhaps put the amount of the PPI redress down as the interest rather than the interest figure? - that is a common mistake.

They are correct. If you nominate an agent to act on your behalf with HMRC then that is what you should do.

No it is not.    You employed a third party as your agent and the this has well documented consequences.    It has been an area rife with scam companies using it to get registered as your agent in all affairs and then either take a cut of any rebate or even keep the whole rebate.  HMRC referring you to fraud suggests that this company is one they come across before or what you explained to HMRC suggests that the company hasn't acted in the way HMRC expect.

In this case, your agent made a mistake and the agent needs to correct it.

There is almost certainly nothing for HMRC to correct.

What you need to do is establish what was submitted for 2018:19 and why interest in excess of £10,000 was declared.

Once you understand that you can, if you wish, take things into your own hands and submit a correction for that year.  You would need to clearly explain what was wrong and what the correct figures are for that tax year.

The simplest option would be to submit an R40 with the correct data and send it with a covering letter explaining its a revision to the original figures.

You should also be aware you have less than 4 weeks to get the revised information to HMRC otherwise it's almost certain that the £1,800 will stand forever and cannot be changed/reduced.

You might want to think carefully about who you appoint as your representative in the future.  Maybe get a recommendation from a friend/relative.

Or just do it yourself, it really isn't difficult.
