I have PC running Windows 10. McAfee free trial is due to end shortly. Is it worth the cost of renewing or is Windows Defender adequate protection?

It's not worth the cost and Defender will be fine.
Add free Malwarebytes and scan occasionally for extra added protection.2 -
I use defender and it is fine!I work from home so my cat can be fed on demand!1

Just ensure you get rid of/uninstall McAfee when you activate Defender

There are instructions for removing it completely on their website, note that if the normal Windows uninstall doesn't work you'll need to download the McAfee removal tool.3
