Bereavement support

Options
Hello just wanted to share a success story last week  I browsed over the emails as I do admittedly i don't always take a lot of notice but something  caught my eye about the bereavement support and partners not allowed to claim.  I lost my partner in 2019 and and the hospital advised me to claim for bereavement support to help me and my children who were 11 and 13 at the time I applied and unfortunately as we had not been married ( although we had been together for 18 years) I was told I could not get it until I read in your post last week I bit the bullet and rang the claims line and low and behold this morning l checked my bank as ussual  and in my bank details there was a payment for 9800 I can't believe this has happened and I'm so grateful for this group. There was no communication or letter just the deposit. I reall did not think for one minute I would get anything. So please if in amy doubt APPLY APPLY APPLY!!!!

Father in law claimed begining of October for his wife who passed mid August. Got back payment and lump sum end of October I think.
  • My daughter’s partner passed away suddenly in 2011.  They were cohabiting, and he was supporting her then two young children from a previous relationship.  At some point she’s been officially advised that she’s not eligible for bereavement support.  Has that situation now changed? And can she now claim despite the fact that the children are now adults?

there is an article here https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/bereavement-support-payment/
what is not clear is whether she would qualify if the children were not her partners

  • Anyone please?

    Bereavement Support Payment: Eligibility - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

If your partner died before 9 February 2023

You may be able to get backdated payments of Bereavement Support Payment if:

    • your partner died after 5 April 2017
    • when your partner died, you were living together as if you were married
    • you were under State Pension age on 30 August 2018

You must have also either been pregnant when your partner died, or you had a child living with you when your partner died and either:

    • you’ve got Child Benefit for that child between when your partner died and when you make your claim
    • you’ve been told by the Child Benefit Office that you were entitled to Child Benefit for that child between when your partner died and when you make your claim

You must apply by 9 February 2024 to get the full amount of backdated payments. You can still apply up until 8 November 2024, but you will not get the full amount.

If your partner died before 6 April 2017, you may be able to get Widowed Parent’s Allowance instead.

  • My partner died in March 2018, I have filled in the form on the Gov website, but do you know if they request documentation requesting that they lived with  you?  We did live together for the last year, but not married and all the bills etc were in my name, he was starting the processing of changing things over.  Anyone had this?
