Receiving electric from no supplier!

First post so please be gentle with me
Have previously received electricity from powergen, but following a lost payment (their mistake) almost two years ago, i have not received a bill from the company since, but am still being supplied electricity. I have rung them up to query this and according to them my contract was terminated after the lost payment issue was resolved. This was news to me as I did not receive any form of communication about this from them.
When I told the powergen rep this, I was told that I or someone else must have switched supplier
Now I know that I didn't and my wife says that she didn't so I'm thinking that someone their end has made a mistake. :rotfl:
Now i am not in the habit of defrauding people/companies and I will gladly pay my dues, but i have tried to settle it with powergen but to no avail. so what should I do now?? I don't want to end up with a huge bill, but if they have made a mistake and are not prepared to investigate then to me thats their problem.
So i'm thinking now, should i try and change supplier and if so how do i go about it given the situation??

Okay. What you need to do is find out your suppilier. As its your electric then you will need to contact MPAS (meter point administration service), however the UK is spilt into various parts. Therefore you need to speak to the devision for your area. If you have any previous bill to hand take a look for your MPAN. Its quite a long number. The first two numbers will be the area.
From there you ring them, they will advise who suppiles then you contact them. You can then advise them that you left PGEN enorrously, in which chase you will be sent back to PGEN. This may be better advice as PGEN will have your previous history and therefore more willing to provide you long term agreement to pay off any oustanding balance.0 -

Powergen have made the mistake and don't seem interested in the lost revenue, therefore why should i not consider changing supplier without paying for the interim electric usage
Does anyone know the extent of the checks a new supplier would carry out if I were to claim ignorance on the previous supplier - such as just moved into property and previous owner leaving no details on electricity supplier. A bit cheeky i know, but i tried to tell'em0 -
To be honest i doubt it will work. The thing with gas and electric is it is always being piped into your property as long as you have supply. So when people move house or change ownership suppilers don't really care to much about the date, it is more the unit. So if the last person at your property used 11118 units, then you would start at 11119 units with that same suppiler. Its then up to you to find out who it is. Then if that suppiler isn't who you want, you change, however you change at todays readings, not the one you started on. So 11120, then your last suppiler will bill from 11118 to 11119.
I would advise finding out sooner rather than later, as when customers first start with new suppiliers they wont be in a normal billing window, therefore your first bill may not be released for 4,5,6 months instead of the normal three. As you would imagine that will be a big nasty bill.

This is all very well - but aren't Powergen supposed to send you a "sorry you're leaving" letter? More to the point - isn't the new supplier supposed to send a statement at least once a year?
I'd have thought that if you haven't had any communication from your current supplier at all, then they will find it very difficult to enforce the account against you. But I could be wrong.
Having your contract terminated doesn't necessarily mean you've changed supplier. It might be because Powergen think you've moved out, and that another tenant has moved in. So I think it's best to assume you probably have a deemed contract with Powergen until you find out otherwise.0 -
Personally I wouldn't bother - I'd set aside the approximate amount of money necessary each month/quarter and forget about it till somebody asks for money (interest accruing all the time of course
)!

Let them chase you, because if you chase them all you'll be doing is making a problem for yourself, if/when a bill finally does arrive.
What pinkonion has suggested is the way to go - it is their responsibility to bill you. The only responsibility you have is in relation to informing them of your address should you move. If you have done this then I would certainly sit back and relax and let them do all the work.0 -
We are having a problem with Seeboard Energy. We left them in 2003 for Sainsbury;'s Energy and when doing our final bill they found that instead of taking the money from our account they had taken it from someone else's bank account!
The final revised bill was then sent to a complete stranger in another town and we finally received it via them. We phoned to arrange payment and was told that someone would send details of how to pay! Never got a letter until a demand for a £1000 came via someone else's address in our village2 weeks ago. On a pension and having forgotten this was still outstanding it has been a shock but worse it has circulated around that we owe money since the letters never come to us - but inside our name and address is clearly written. A complete fiasco. I want to write to the CEO of Seeboard since this started with their inefficiency but I can't find his name.No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -
Oh and just to add insult to injury we have lived here for 25 years and are on the Voters list. Hardly evasion tactics.
