Overdue delivery: who to request compensation from?

DPD have caused me some inconvenience this past week by misrouting an item I ordered; their mistake has turned a two-day delivery into one of unknown duration. I was originally expecting to receive my item on Monday, or Tuesday at the latest, and took a couple of days off so I would be home to receive it, but right now I have no idea when it will turn up. DPD's tracking website simply says "There is a delay with your parcel".

My question is: should I be chasing DPD or the retailer for compensation?

You have no relationship with DPD, your relationship and contract is with the retailer. Depending on the retailer and the value of the order you will likely get nothing, if it is a large order and you are a good customer you may get a £10-20 "shup up and go away" payment.

I assume the retailer is the one with the contract with DPD so you are not a DPD customer and cannot complain (I assume you didn't contract DPD to go and collect your item)

Your beef is with the retailer, look at their T&Cs

Speak to the retailer, be polite and charming, and you might get a small gesture of goodwill.

You have no right to compensation from anybody.  Best you can hope for is a goodwill gesture.

You should check the retailers terms regarding late delivery, they will probably have covered themselves to limit their liability to, at best, any enhanced delivery fee only.

You are likely looking for a goodwill gesture rather than the right to any compensation.

Did you pay extra for a guaranteed delivery timeframe?

Your post says "Monday or Tuesday at the latest" which implies you did not opt for a guaranteed service on a particular day, in which case these are usually an estimate. Check the T&Cs.

If it was something you needed urgently then I suggest cancelling and re-ordering and pay for a next day or weekend guaranteed delivery.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
