Specialist misdiagnosed leak and dug up floor unnecessarily

    Yes, swelling that created a gap between them and the wall.

    The floor was retiled and the skirting reattached. I suspect the levelling mixture for the tiles may have created some moisture.

    That's almost certainly the cause.  The tradesman should have delayed putting the skirting back on until everything was settled and dried out.
