Always getting rejected for credit

Hi,

I wanted to get one of the recommended stoozing cards but I was reject instantly. Ever since I started using credit when I went to uni I've found it almost impossible to get approved, and I really can't see why. I'm 24, never missed any payments, earn a nice wage, have no debts (other than student loan), and always pay off my existing card monthly. My girlfriend on the other hand is almost drowning in debt, earns a bad wage, and can only pay back the minimum every month. She has never had any problem getting approved for cards, and always gets a huge overdraft (especially when compared to mine).

Why is this so? The only reason I can think of i that lenders dont lend to people who can afford it. Is there anything I can do to help them realise that i'm a good candidate for credit?

btw, I've just received my credit report and it's all fine.

Thanks
David.

First of all make sure you are on the electoral register. Its hard to say what the problem is but have you actually built up a credit record? I see you say that you never missed any payments I take it these were for student loans. You will need to apply for a card that will accept people without good credit history such as the Vanquis card. They have high interest rate but as long as you pay it in full then you don't need to worry about that.
Sounds like your girlfriend has obviously already built a credit record,, as long as her record shows she pays on time even if its the minimum then her record will score better than yours.

  • I agree with webbo 100, it's not normally something that's top of your priorities whilst in halls of residence/digs but do make sure you're on the electoral role at your current address.

Also consider applying for a credit card from whoever you bank with, as you'll already have built up an internal credit history with them and they'll hopefully regard you more favourably.

The other thing I'd recommend is being persistent! If you get turned down by a provider, write and ask why and then appeal it. You may have to provide proof of income, etc. but eventually someone will relent!
