Lodger Problem
DualFuel
My lodger keeps knocking on my bedroom door at 2 or 3am asking if I can roll her a cigarette out of my stash because she doesn't smoke often. She's done this around 15 times over 5 months since moving in. She rarely smokes and knows I always have tobacco. When I don't answer to her knocking/calling out my name she just carries in doing it until I get up and ask her what's wrong. She gets drunk in her room and tries to act clueless about her behaviour, then never says sorry for waking me up the next day. What would you do? I had it out with her last night and have done before but she keeps doing it, also told her to buy her own fags

It sounds a lot like having a cat! If you give in and do what they want when they make a pain of themselves they quickly learn that it works and keep doing it. Either a) ignore them or b) put out a cigarette each night in anticipation. Also, if lodgers are similar to cats, you could try doing daytime activities with them to wear them out so they sleep better at night!1

Buy her a pack of 200, if that is all she wants, a small price to pay?1

On a more serious note (because this does sound like a tricky situation) you may want to move your post to the “buying, selling and renting” section where you may find other people who have lodgers1

What is the notice period in your lodger contract? One week?
Give her written notice and find a lodger who is more suitable.0 -
I would kick her out, not even a question to me, unless you secretly hope she knocks one night wanting more than a cigarette, in such case I might reconsider, simple4

What does signed lodger agreement state about either side giving notice please? Do it!1

I would ask her to leave. Alcohol and cigarettes together can be disastrous.I live in sheltered housing where there are 33 individual flats. One of the residents had an adult son visiting and he lit a cigarette in the flat after consuming a massive amount of alcohol. Result - the alarms went off at 3 o’clock in the morning, the fire brigade arrived quickly and the flat was gutted and ones either side were not habitable for a few months. Luckily our fire alarms are connected to the fire station Due to the prompt action by the firefighters no one was hurt apart from a bit of smoke inhalation. The estimated damage was over £250k.Smoking is not permitted in the communal areas but it is permitted in the flats. We were lucky, it could have been a lot worse and the neighbours arrived with chairs, blankets and gallons of tea as we had to stay outside until the fire brigade allowed us back in.
