2nd job + UC + pensions

Hi

I wasn’t sure if I should post here or the employment board so maybe I will do both.

I spotted an opportunity to apply for a secong job and 100% work from home. The employer is based in the USA - PST time zone, so evenings in the UK. It is meant to be part time and independent.

The role is something I always wanted to get more experience in and complements my 1st job well. In fact I believe that I will grow, learn and become a best worker overall.

I go to bed late and spend the evenings scrolling on social media - if I get this position I will be doing something more positive, earn money and learn / develop myself. It is something I can do easily from my sofa if I want - a part from a few meetings from time to time here and there.

My queries are:

- How will this affect my UC? How will I inform tjem monthly about my extra earnings? I suspect I will come off UC anyway which is my desired outcome.

- Would I need to inform HMRC or DWP? Will I pay tax on this money here or in the USA? Or pay a fee to have this money transferred over, converted from dollar to pounds?

- Would I need to inform my LA since I’m a council tenant?

If your are resident in the UK and receive a wage from abroad you will need to pay tax on it, this will mean a tax self assessment.

I would believe you would need to declare this to DWP for your UC claim.

I also believe you can be paid in US dollar but your bank will apply a charge for receiving it and the conversation rate will fluctuate.   I know slightly different but i have a payment in Australian dollar going from my account and i get two small fees applied.

You could check your tenancy agreement with the council to see if you need to notify them, but I very much doubt you will. Tenancy Agreements often preclude running a business from the property without permission, so you would have to ask permission to name the property as the registered office of a buisness, but they won't restrict doing self-employed work at home.

I thought in terms of losing my council tenancy if I earn more money or is the tenancy unrelated to my income now that I have a secure tenancy in place? And yes, it looks like I will have to register as a sole trader to carry on this work as a contractor so will use my home address for that.

The tenancy is unrelated to your income. You could go onto be a millionaire, and still keep your tenancy, providing you make your rent payments.

It's difficult to get a council property if you aren't on a low income, because they tend to prioritise people who can't afford private rented properties, but once you have a tenancy, your income can increase without any risk to it.
