Bought a scam ring now out of 30day ebay moneyback

I bought my wife a brand new eternity ring but second hand off eBay and held onto it for just over 4 weeks until it was her birthday. She wore it out that night for a meal and lo and behold loses a baguette diamond, obviously worried this should not happen wearing for one evening I took the ring to a local jewelers. He asked what I gave for the ring £750 he said it’s not worth more than £300, he showed me the diamonds under the scope and they were all broken and tapered so no matter what he said it would happen again, he said this is a scammers ring made up off sweepings. I have since contacted the seller. They are not interested in taking the ring back and eBay have been unhelpful stating Ian past the 30days I explained why and they still were unable to help, they said I needed a police icn number? I said and I was right, police are also not interested! This is my own fault but any idea if I can do anything to resolve being out of pocket? Thank you

What was it specifically advertised as. Realistically if you didn't know it was broken would the seller have?

My local police force (and presumably many others) have a system for reporting crimes online. I don't know if anyone ever looks at these reports, but they are a way to generate a police number.

OP - What a ring is ‘worth’ is not the same as what it sells for, and actually paying £750 for a £300 pound ring isn’t at all bad. A lot of modern fashionable brands would have a mark up of considerably more.

However it all depends on what it was sold as, so as HampshireH says check exactly what the advert says. If it is a generic description for example 18kt gold set with diamonds and sapphires then that is probably what you have especially as it was sold as second hand. If however the description was more descriptive and used exact terms like the clarity of the stones, the colour on the spectrum the carat weight of stones then get a jewellers report to state the ring is significantly not as described. Then you can use that report to take seller to small claims if they won’t assist you with a return.

Incidentally what is sellers feedback like? Look at it carefully, even positives can give a clue especially if they state things like ‘had an issue but seller refunded on returned so all is well’. A seller who routinely scams would have some Indication in their feedback somewhere. If the feedback is all good then this might suggest a genuine mistake and seller on eBay doesn’t have to refund after the 30 days have elapsed, but a letter before action might do the trick.

Contact Trading Standards. They'll advise what you can do.

As Soolin says though it's not such a bad deal that you've been conned. I'd guess that most high street bought £750 rings aren't worth much more than £300. You'd probably be better off getting money back if it was only worth a tenner.

  • No mention of whether this was a private seller or business, may make a difference, can you clarify OP?

I'm not really seeing the scam or crime here to be getting the police involved.

What was it that you bought on Ebay exactly and what did you receive? What is it that is not as described?

Obviously it's not great that the ring lost a stone on first wearing but if you bought it second hand from a private seller on ebay then you don't have any warranty or rights to return it.

Aren't most high street jeweller's rings of the same basic idea - cheapo diamonds set in gold in a way to make them look more valuable than they really are? Unless you've actually bought a graded diamond then you kind of get whatever you get but I think at that point you're generally talking a few thousand pounds from a high street jeweller.

I agree with this. You need to know what the jeweller actually meant by this.
Did he mean he would have put it in his window priced at £300?

It may be me but I'm confused by this:

Really need to know what was said in the listing description before knowing whether you would be able to take it any further.....

The OP hasn't been back since posting so we will never know what happened or be able to help further.
