    It actually was used by Apple initially to signify internet ready, as in the first named device which was the all-in-one iMac launched in 1998 - the Bondi Blue iMac.

    Then Apple just turned into a generic branding, as the only iPod to have a net connection at the moment is the iPod Touch (iPhone obviously too).
