You can sell the shares for as little as £5.95 via a company like X-O, but you'll still need to pay to replace the paper certificate(s) first if they've been lost and the shares aren't held in your name electronically.

Once you've obtained the replacement certificate, you would need to create an account with an online broker like X-O, then post the certificate to them along with a Crest transfer form. Once in your account, you can then log in and sell them any time you like.

Presumably your shares are worth between £100 and £1000, so the charge is made up of the countersignature fee (£23) and the admin fee (£42).

There's some info on the process and fees here, if you haven't seen it already...

What's, "HBSO"? You mean HSBC? (HSBA.L). If HBOS then they're gone and are now Lloyds and whatever 271 shares were converted to probably wouldn't be worth very much.
