Eligibility checker confusion

Hi, im wondering if anyone can offer me any insight on this…

I have a credit card with Halifax, which has a £2k limit, and a nil balance. I’ve had it for 8 years, I thought I would look at seeing what card I could switch too through their eligibility checker and it came back saying they can’t offer me any products at present.

I have no adverse on my credit file whatsoever on all 3 CRA’s.

The only thing I can think is that I had a default with barclaycard which fell off my credit report a few months ago, and around the time of default some 7 years ago - Halifax reduced my limit from £6k to £1200 as a result.

This is making me think, do Halifax black list someone who they ever know has defaulted in the past, as I have no adverse on my credit report whatsoever and eligibility with other cards seems fine.

  • Halifax can't have blacklisted you as you currently have one of the cards.  They also couldn't blacklist you because of a default with someone else that they cannot see.

If you want another card, you would be far better looking at the wider market, not getting additional cards from a single provider.

Do Halifax allow you to have more than one credit card with them? Some dont and so any check with them would automatically fail because of the existence of the first card
  • Yes Halifax allow more than one card, they seem to encourage it. Odd isn't it?
    Old enough to know better...........

  • Yes it’s very strange, that I’ve never missed a payment on the Halifax credit card, also has an overdraft for 5 years on an account now closed that never missed a payment.

I’m happy to go with another provider to widen the market, but I’m mainly concerned if I want to get an AIP with them, as a soft search for a credit card came back no, I imagine the exact same thing will happen for a mortgage 😔
