Son just passed driving test - telematics insurance?

Hello

My son passed his driving test about 2 weeks ago, and I added him on to my car insurance (1.3L Toyota Yaris), with Admiral) and paid a fee about £50 as there was only 6 weeks left until the insurance ran out.

I'm now looking at renewals for the coming year and I'm getting quotes of around £680 with him as an additional driver (and he will be as it is my one and only car). However the cheapest quotes require telematics of either black box or app, but what I can't seem to find out is whether I would be required to use the telematics when I drive or just him? Hoping someone can clarify that's been in a similar position, thank you.

I thought the black box worked with the car, and not the driver. In which case it wouldn't be able to differentiate between you or your son. Not sure you’d want to be monitored?

    I don't ha ha!

Quotes without the telematics were closer to £900 though

    I've just been through this.

The "modern" black box situation seems to be a fob that is stuck in the car and an app on the young driver's phone. This app does all the black box stuff, but additionally monitors for phone use when driving.

When the youngster is a PASSENGER in the car, they go into the app and notify it that they aren't driving.

There may be some insurers still using a hard-wired box, but I didn't receive a quote from one.

AIUI a 'black box' has no user interface, so it can't 'know' who is driving.

So you don't need to have an app installed on your phone, it would be just for him? As I could live with that. Out of interest what does the fob stuck in the car do, and if you don't mind me asking which company did you use? Thanks again

So when the youngster wants to race his friends (or drive with a skinful of beer), all he has to do is tell the app he's a passenger? What could possibly go wrong?
  • Avoid telematics if at all possible.  Your driving will probably wreck his score
