Washer dryer problem

Options
Hi everyone,

I have a washer dryer, and have noticed yesterday and today that although the washer is working just fine, the dryer doesn't seem to be working at all. The dryer goes around and sounds as though it is working, but things come out soggy wet still and not at all warm.

Is there anything I can check myself that could be causing this?

Please help - not a great time for it to break when it's Christmas, then we go away on holiday for a week, and there is nowhere I can put my clothes to dry :o

Not unless you're electrically competent (;) ) and can check power is going to the heating element (when the switch is on). It's the most likely cause - and can be burnt out - or (has happened to ours in the past) the power supply has disconnected owing to the vibration of the machine. Less likely cause is that it's that position on the master switch that's gone.

Other than checking there are no obviously loose connections (with the machine unplugged) - its a job for someone with a bit of experience?

That's a shame :-( Right ok thanks for that. I hope that none of those things you suggested (other than the loose wire of course) are too expensive to fix/replace.

The heating element tends to be cheap and cheerful (but + the engineer !). The master switch - relatively more expensive, I'm afraid. (But the matched betting profit - in your sig - will more than cover it !!)

Electrical equipment has an affinity for going on strike just before holidays ... I find.

Matched betting profits are all towards stamp duty when we move house I'm afraid! Hmm, sounds like we'll just have to call someone out and cross fingers that it is the cheaper thing to fix.

Yes, typical that it should choose now of all weeks...ah well. Thanks again for your help.

Had same problem with my dryer and assumed it was heating element gone (again!!), so bit the financial bullet and called out engineer. Turned out it wasn't element, but there were clumps of soggy wet lint in the bottom that were both reducing and cooling the air flow. Cleaned them all out - washer fine!
  • Have you tried cleaning the filter? As timestar mentions this could be the problem as its happened to us. Take the filter out and clean it under hot water, see if that works before calling engineers out- call-out charges:eek:
  • Ours did the same thing. I checked the hot air exhaust outside and heard gurgling noises. It turned out that water had condensed in the vent pipe where it dipped down to the floor behind the dryer. Cleaned it all out, got rid of all soggy lint, adjusted pipe routing to prevent reoccurence and it works like new now.

Yours may additional have tripped the thermostat. Your manual will have specific advice on resetting this (the Bosch needs the rear panel taking off to do this).

Thanks for the replies about checking the filter - no I haven't done this. I will dig out the manual and have a look. Might be coincidence, but the last time the dryer worked was after I had washed and dried some thickish bathmats for the first time, so there WOULD have been a fair bit of lint coming off them I expect, as they were brand new.

Thanks - I will give it a try and report back.
