Smart meters only give "estimated" readings....

  • I have taken photographs of the actual gas meter at the moment I switched the gas off, and then several hours later. The reading is identical. It's only the smart meter that continues to clock up. I'm an old biddy, but it seems there's something isn't right. I have sent both photographs to e-on but all I got was the extract I included above. E-on insist there's nothing wrong with my smart meter.

The "Actual gas meter" is the Smart Meter.
The thing you are referring to as still clocking up use is the In House Display - it is not an energy meter in any way, shape or form, and as and when prices change you may well find it's far from accurate for a while, so be cautious relying on it tp show you your spend. they are best used to monitor actual use in relative real-time particularly for electricity as this is often whether the information can be used to make significant changes to how you do things which will, in turn, help you lower your spending.

E-on are correct in saying that there is nothing wrong with your smart meter.

Think about it this way. You boil water in the kettle for your tea, and when it reaches boiling point, you pour the water into the teapot. By the time the water reaches the teapot it is no longer boiling - but this doesn't mean that the kettle is faulty, just that there is a short time delay between the water boiling, and it reaching the teapot, and that allows for a drop in temperature. In this analogy the kettle is the smart meter - working just fine - and the teapot is the IHD - also working just fine, but not getting the data until slightly later.

  • I switch off and the pilot light on the boiler goes off. I hear the boiler stop working. I took photographs of the actual gas meter at the time of switching off and then later. The readings were identical. These photographs (of the actual gas meter, not the smart meter reading) together with photographs of the  Gas+Electric, Electric and Gas readings on the smart meter were sent to e-on. It's only the smart meter that keeps going. At 9.47 this morning when I switched off, the gas reading on the smart meter was £2.13, 25.29 kWh. At 10.01 it had increased to £2.36, 28.36 kWh. It all seems tailor-made to confuse, and THAT always makes me suspicious of trickery of some sort.

Store that in the back of your mind. You are being billed using readings 'pulled' by the supplier from your meters. The IHD could be tossed into the rubbish bin and you would still receive accurate bills from your supplier.

  • One more time...the IHD is not the smart meter.

Are you able to share the photos that you took? Only one each of what you are calling the actual gas meter and the smart meter. You will need to black out any meter serial numbers that can identify you.

Hey guys - all of us repeating the same thing time after time is probably not helping.

There is no trickery of any sort. The reason that the IHD has shown an increase is because the update from the meter (covering the period 9.30 am to 10am) came through at 10am. This would be show as an increase in usage (kWh) and the cost.

The increase shown covers the period from 9.30am to 9.47 am when gas was being used.

    Hi,
this is your smart gas meter,
this is your IHD, in house/home display.
Your bill/statement is based on readings from gas meter (first image).
  • One more time...the IHD is not the smart meter.
Then why did e-on ask me for photographs of the gas meter AND the smart meter?

Thank you. My old grey cells can deal with this answer! 😊
