  • Using Degreedays for the Bournemouth area, over the last 5 months, it has been slightly colder.
5 winter months last year = 1083 Degreedays
5 winter months his year = 1139 Degreedays

Do you mean Heating degree days?  Otherwise, your figures suggest that this year was slightly warmer.

At least in Glasgow this February has been remarkably warm by comparison to 2022 & that was warm by comparison to 2021.
Seems like General Winter is not working for the wee man in the east so far.

Although those that choose to go without heating might have benefited.

    This should explain.  https://www.degreedays.net/

Well, yes...  And I am more than familiar with the concept.  But degree days themselves are the total number of degrees over the period, so a warmer period has a higher figure.  If you are applying a threshold (apart from 0C) and only counting degree days below this, which I suspect you are doing, then that is Heating degree days where a higher figure would mean that the weather had been colder.

Probly not about turning off heat for short periods , but for my end of terrace  i'm finding it a question of how much extra does it cost to leave it on full time.
Temperatures outside for last few weeks between 6 to 8 degrees in day and 1 to 4 degrees night low. Midlands.  Rooms in house between 10 to 12 degrees 6:30 am  and much the same at 7pm. Then 3 hours to get to 18 degrees.
Am finding it worth spending another £2 a day to keep it on 24hrs set at 14 degrees night and day then turn up to 19 degrees in evening. Still working on it but there is massive difference between 12 and 14 degrees  in terms of comfort. And getting to 19 degreeze is a breeze
Edit  lucky to being able to afford it of course.

Shut the door ,we don’t live in a barn. How true! My wife ,bless her ,hears me say this. However,I remember an advertisement on TV in the 70’s that showed, via a thermometer, how quick an open door draws the high temperature out! And it’s so true. The doors are there for a reason.
  . . . The old ones are the best!

I shall have to YouTube that TV advert. Sounds like one the govt should be reissuing these days!

Further to that: another favourite - "Put a hat on: You lose 40° through your head!" - is in fact data I read myself!, years ago. Looks like it runs in the family, this learning-what-works 'approach' to life. The apple surely doesn't fall far from the tree! ,-)
