How long is it taking to receive a completion date on a house?

  • I too accepted an offer on my house middle of December and offered on a house second week of Jan and just waiting to hear when an exchange date can be done, as I think everything has been done. But the frustration of not knowing or hearing anything is driving me mad. So fingers crossed you hear something soon.

Unbeknown to me a previous purchase I completed on was hung up for weeks because the buyers solicitor was hung up about a tree preservation order for a tree, or group of trees, on my land. I didn't have any trees on my land and never had done, and my solicitor told them that. A back and forth ensued which no one informed me about, and the EA was useless in chasing things up. Turns out the trees were on council land over the road and had been removed erroneously by the council/building contractor years before when clearing land for a new substation.

Took me weeks of chasing to get to the bottom of it.

Sometimes you've got to be a pest to find out what is going on.

10 months, but we have finally exchanged.

Not sure what relevance my or other peoples' experience is to you though. Every case is unique.

I know every case is unique. I wanted a rough guide on how long it was taking people since 2020. I wasn't sure if this had impacted on the process with some people and businesses still working from home. I've moved pre-covid and the move was far more complicated than this but we got through it and completed in 3 months.

From others comments, it seems a long time to be waiting for completion especially as this one is pretty straightforward. I'm hoping I won't be here still in 10 months time tbh...

Thank you for your reply. Yes, it's the frustration of not hearing anything either. Especially when I'm chasing and getting the same answers back each time. Our solicitor has got us to sign everything and we're still waiting on the buyers now! This has been two weeks, I'm sure they're trying to hold off for some reason. They've also sent over an email to our solicitors asking the same questions which have been answered many times previously and paperwork has been shown to account for their questions.

I'm really hoping we haven't got this far into it and they decide to back out. It's just bizarre to me that they wanted a fast purchase and we wanted a fast sale and yet it just seems to come to a stop every time we ask for a completion date.

Fingers crossed you hear something soon and you receive a completion date!

Oh no, it sounds like a right nightmare that they were so hung up on something that wasn't even on your land! Our EA is useless too, and they were highly recommended... Our EA has the 'it's nothing to do with me' attitude no matter how many times I try requesting information about the sale, I always get the same reply of 'speak to your solicitor' (like I haven't done already).

Thank you, I think I will be chasing this up for many more weeks to come yet. Here's hoping the EA get sick of me and actually chase up both sides rather than me only being able to go off what my solicitors are saying.

    Thank you.
