Hi
Im thinking of buying OneDrive, the most basic package. Id like to back up my financial (self employed) business accounts. I notice that the free version of got I have 5gb which is more than ample for my needs, but I can only save 1 file in their 'vault'. Which has given me pause for thought: if their OneDrive is secure, why would they have the Personal Vault feature? Surely there wouldnt be need of it if OneDrive was safe.
Does anyone else backup sensitive data to OneDrive? For years Ive been backing up data to an external harddrive, but perhaps I need to get in the habit of backing up to the cloud.
I suppose the other benefit of using a paid version of OneDrive is that I get ad-free Outlook which would be nice.
Just looking for some advice/opinions really. Is OneDrive secure enough to backup my financial data (as well as passwords!).
Thanks

Yes it is fine. If you’re that concerned then use 7-zip to compress your files, password protect the zipped file and save that to Onedrive. Will be very secure.1

Well the obvious benefit of copying to the cloud is that you can get to it from anywhere in a worse case scenario. Assuming you have internet access of course. But of course if you're only going to do that once in a blue moon, it may be cracking a nut with a sledgehammer type of approach.Nothing to stop you buying a second external drive and keeping it off site/out of your house/business, so you can recover that copy instead if the house burns down or something.Note that if you are going to encrypt your files with password as above, don't lose the password. Brute force is a thing but takes hours and hours, days weeks and years the longer and more complicated the password becomes.1

Personally subscribe to Microsoft 365 for office apps etc and therefore that includes a reasonable amount of space on OneDrive though tend to use it more for clients instances than my personal (namely as I cant be bothered transferring everything across from DropBox1 -
If you're worried and don't need to regularly access the stuff on Onedrive, just to use it as a backup, then use an app like Ashampoo Backup Pro to create an encrypted backup. But don't forget the password! It's pretty cheap to buy and if you keep an eye out they often give away free licenses for earlier versions of the app, which will work just as well.1
