Joint tenants; single mortgage

My partner and I are buying a house together and will both contribute 50:50. He has enough cash for his half, where as I need to port my existing Santander mortgage across (1 year of current deal left), plus my equity. When I spoke to Santander yesterday they said that my partner needs to come on my mortgage to allow me to port; they went through the numbers with me yesterday and they have given me an approval in principle over the phone - based on both of us. I understand why they say we both need to be on the mortgage -  so that they are protected if I default etc. My question is, when I come to renew my mortgage next year, is there a way, with another lender, that both our names can be on the deeds, but only my name on the mortgage? My partner is about to be mortgage free for the first time when he sells his current house to buy with me, is obviously not overly keen on the idea of being £290k in debt again by putting his name on my mortgage!

    HSBC used to do sole borrower joint proprietor mortgages, not sure if they still do, but it was direct only I believe, not allowed through brokers. No idea if anyone else is doing them as well now...

    HSBC stopped doing them during covid and never restarted.  Worth a call to check but 99% sure they don't.

    No one else will do it either. Far too much hassle for the legalities of repossession for anyone to think it's worth their time

    I'm not surprised, it is a minefield for the solicitors as well.

    As I recount when one of these comes up a solicitor I know said due to previous experience he would double his fee to do another HSBC A2 indirect charge case.
