My daughter is just on electric for heating and appliances etc, no other fuel. We in rural areas on oil etc are getting £200 into electric account. She doesn't think she is entitled to this. Is this correct??

She would be best to assume that she won't get it - although there are some circumstances where people have been paid the £400 EBSS payments AND now the £200 alternative fuel payment too.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

No she is not entitled if she only uses elecetricty for heating.
Some do receive it even if they only use electrcity if they are in an area where no gas is available, and the majority of residents in this area are using oil or LPG.

As far as I know if you heat with either gas or electricity you are not only getting the £400 but the benefit of the Energy Price Guarantee on every kwh of gas or leccy that's used whether its a little or a lot. Therefore the more you use the higher the value of the benefit.
Whereas those who use oil or other forms of heating will still get the £400 but wont benefit from the EPG in the same way as they aren't using gas or leccy for heating. They should therefore qualify for the £200 alternative fuels payment to help redress the balance.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1 -
Just received my £200 in circumstances similar to the OP’s daughter. We are rural, no mains gas and are surrounded by houses that use oil, LPG or wood to heat their homes. We have an ASHP supplemented by a log burner. In my case, the government’s AFP eligibility tests are true in respect of mains gas but false in respect of main heating source, which is an ASHP. Might be bull manure, but my feeling is that the needed gov infrastructure (and cost therefore) to identify a relatively small number of households, off mains gas, using electricity as the main source of heating, makes cheaper to pay out to some ineligible households, like me and the OP’s daughter (least worse option, so to say). I rang my energy supplier (Octopus) asking if the payment was an error. They said it wasn’t. My dilemma is that there is no mechanism, that I have identified at least, to check (beyond what I have done so far) that it is ok to keep the benefit despite my ineligibility. I am looking for something official on the gov website and in the absence of same, a way to pay the money back. Any suggestions guys?
